Interpreters do not simply ‘translate words’, they get the message across to the audience. Like surfers on a wave, they keep riding on the speaker’s stream of thoughts and carry the message right into the target language.

simultaneous and consecutive interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting
The oral translation of the spoken word in “real time”, while the speaker is speaking. The simultaneous interpreter needs to have a very high level of concentration. To ensure successful communication, it is therefore in the interests of the customer to have two interpreters who alternate every 20 to 30 minutes.
Video sample:
Advantage: The flow of communication is not interrupted, and time and efficiency are gained vis-à-vis consecutive interpreting.
Disadvantage: There are additional costs for the interpreting technology (interpreting booths with an interpreting panel, microphone and headsets for the participants...).
To be considered: Each event with international participation costs a lot of money. Simultaneous interpreting will help you to make optimal use of your valuable time.
We will be happy to advise you on the type of interpreting that is best suited to your purposes and which additional options exist (e.g. whispered and liaison interpreting).
Consecutive interpreting
The oral translation of the spoken word at the end of a speech or section of meaning (in this case, there is a continuous sequence of interpretation).
Video sample:
Advantage: Requires no elaborate technology. Consecutive interpreting is usually done by one interpreter alone.
Disadvantage: It takes up a lot of time. Every half-hour of actual speaking time occupies about an hour of your time. If the length of the speeches or sections of meaning are too long before being interpreted, the listener’s attention might occasionally wane.
To be considered: Consecutive interpreting often stimulates a lively and immediate atmosphere for discussion, e.g. at training sessions or negotiations (as the message is transmitted face-to-face without the use of elaborate technology). It allows the participants more time for reflection.
